She Y\u00fcn<\/em>\u00a0is helping to achieve the \u2018Sustainable Development Goals\u2019 in the Indian state of Sikkim<\/h2>\n

As a civil society organisation, She Y\u00fcn intends to play a role as a partner in achieving the objectives of the United Nations’ \u201c2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/em>\u201d, which aims to bring about a \u201cpeaceful, prosperous and sustainable\u201d world based on respect for fundamental Human Rights<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She Y\u00fcn<\/em> adheres to the principles of the SDGs<\/h2>\n

She Y\u00fcn<\/em> ensures that its school support programme is open to an equal number of girls and boys, who are selected on the basis of vulnerability criteria. In doing so, it is putting into practice at its own level its commitment to the principles that underpin the SDGs, including the principle of \u2018leaving no one behind<\/em>\u2019 (LNOB), with a view to combating poverty (SDG 1) and reducing inequality (SDG 10).\u00a0<\/p>\n

She Y\u00fcn<\/em> identifies SDG4 as its number-one SDG<\/h2>\n

In its desire to provide the children and young people who benefit from its programme with support throughout their education\/training pathway, from basic education to access to decent work, She Y\u00fcn is firmly committed to the very spirit of SDG4 and is contributing more specifically to the achievement of targets 1 and 4 of this SDG1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Target 4.4: <\/b>‘… increase (…) the number of young people (…) with the skills, especially technical and vocational skills, needed for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship’.<\/p>\n

She Y\u00fcn<\/em> contributes to the achievement of other SDGs<\/h2>\n

In line with the principle of intersectionality that characterizes the SDGs, She Y\u00fcn<\/em>‘s intervention in the field of education also intersects with the ambitions of other SDGs.<\/p>\n

In addition to its contribution to the collective effort to achieve SDG 1 (\u2018eradicate poverty\u2019) and SDG 10 (\u2018reduce inequality\u2019), She Y\u00fcn<\/em> is also helping to achieve the targets of the following SDGs:<\/p>\n

She Y\u00fcn’s<\/em> action is in line with the International Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/h2>\n

By promoting equal access to school education for ‘vulnerable’ girls and boys in Sikkim, She Y\u00fcn’s<\/em> action is specifically in line with the framework of the Rights of Provision of the CRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, signed by India in 1989). The Rights of Provision consist of guaranteeing children access to various services and facilities, including ‘school related’ services\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Rights of Participation<\/em> of the CRC give children the opportunity to make their voices heard. By enabling the children of the programme to build their own life project by making the inherent choices in their school careers, She Y\u00fcn aims at making the Rights of Participation a reality, in particular and above all that expressed \u00a8in article 12: ‘to enable children to express their views freely on all matters affecting them’.<\/p>\n

Aware of the indissociability of the Rights of the Child<\/em> (Provision, Protection, Participation), She Y\u00fcn<\/em> intends to make its contribution to the concrete implementation of the principles of the CRC, whether in the context of its own actions or in the wider context of actors working in this direction in Sikkim.<\/p>\n

Where is Sikkim?<\/h2>

Sikkim is a state in India, located in the northeastern part of the country, in the eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India. Sikkim is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, by Bhutan to the southeast, by the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west. The capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part of the state.<\/p>

A part of the Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and the third highest on Earth. Sikkim's capital and largest city is Gangtok. Almost 35% of the state is covered by the Khangchendzonga National Park.<\/p>

Long a sovereign political entity, Sikkim became a protectorate of India in 1950 and an Indian state in 1975. Its small size notwithstanding, Sikkim is of great political and strategic importance for India because of its location along several international boundaries. Its area is 2,740 square miles (7,096 square km) and its population (2011) is 607,688.

The native Sikkimese consist of the Bhutias, who migrated from the Kham district of Tibet in the 14th century, and the Lepchas, who are believed to have migrated from the Far East. Tibetans reside mostly in the northern and eastern reaches of the state. Migrant resident communities include Bengalis, Biharis, and Marwaris who are prominent in south Sikkim and Gangtok.<\/p>

People and Culture<\/h2>

The people of Sikkim consist of three ethnic groups, the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali. Communities of different ethnicities intermingle freely in Sikkim. Hindu Temples coexist with Buddhist monasteries, churches, mosques, and gurudwara. These myriad cultures have produced a quintessential Sikkimese culture that encompasses all ways and walks of life, but each has managed to preserve its own identity. This can be seen in the various places of worship, festivals, and cultural dances that are celebrated throughout the year.

Nepali is the lingua franca of Sikkim, while Sikkimese (Bhutia) and Lepcha are spoken in certain areas. English is also spoken and understood in most of Sikkim. Other languages include Dzongkha, Groma, Hindi, Majhi, Majhwar, Thulung, Tibetan, and Yakha.
The major languages spoken as per the 2001 census are Nepali (62.61%), Sikkimese (Bhutia) (7.73%), Hindi (6.67%), Lepcha (6.61%), Limbu (6.34%), Sherpa (2.57%), Tamang (1.87%), and Rai (1.64%).
